Evaluate Ancestor Success with Pedigree Search

To determine the success of an individual ancestor or a combination of ancestors, the Pedigree Search feature on the first page provides two main areas for analysis.

G1 Goldmine's Pedigree Search is an easy yet powerful tool to use to identify success
Find success with Pedigree Search

Right Side: Complete Pedigree Chart

The right side of the search page displays a comprehensive pedigree chart, where each position is searchable. You can search by selecting a single spot within this chart or by combining multiple ancestors. After selecting your desired horse(s), click "Search" to generate a list of results based on these selections.

Left Side: Pedigree Quarters and Halves

The left side of the search page breaks down the pedigree into quarters and halves to maximise the effectiveness of your search.

Search by Quarters (Q1, Q2, Q3 & Q4)

  • Q1: The top quarter of the pedigree, including the sire and his sire’s family.
  • Q2: The second quarter, encompassing the sire and his dam’s family.
  • Q3: The third quarter, which includes the dam sire’s family.
  • Q4: The last quarter, featuring the dam’s female family.

Search by Halves (H1 & H2)

For broader searches, you can use H1 and H2, which divide the pedigree into halves. This allows you to search for a horse anywhere within a selected half of the pedigree, providing a more extensive search scope as it will generally include more runners and therefore more stakes winners.

By utilising these tools, you can efficiently analyse the success of specific ancestors or combinations within a horse’s pedigree.

For example:

Say we want to investigate Pierro (Lonhro x Miss Right Note) and Metal Storm (Kenmare x Porphyrine) using Pedigree Search.

We would start with the option which would provide the most possible runners, which is less specific but will give us an initial indication of success or failure. To do this, I would enter Pierro in H1 and Metal Storm in H2:

After clicking search we are presented with the results page. This page tells us there are 11 runners with 4 stakes winners. These stakes winners are listed in the table above. We can also see that this cross, when Pierro is ANYWHERE in the sire's family (H1) and Metal Storm is ANYWHERE in the dam's family (H2), the cross is producing 18.18% G1W/Rnrs and 36.36% SW/Rnrs.

Tightening the search by using Quarters

Now we know these ancestors are exceptional when they're anywhere in the halves, we want to restrict the search further as the horse we're analysing has this cross with Metal Storm in Q4. So we are now going to edit this search and move Metal Storm into the Q4 position:

After clicking Search, we can see that in fact the results were unchanged due to all of Pierro x Metal Storm's stakes winners are when Metal Storm himself are located in the 4th quarter. Normally, we would expect the total runner count to shrink. In this example, there was no change!

G1 Goldmine's Pedigree Search tool is essential for anyone serious about buying or breeding racehorses. By allowing you to analyse the success and failures of individual or combined ancestors, it provides a scientific, data-driven approach to breeding. This tool helps you make informed decisions, maximise genetic potential, reduce risks, and enhance the economic and competitive value of your horses. Utilising Pedigree Search is not just a smart choice; it's a necessary step towards achieving excellence in the horse racing and breeding industry.
