Breeding Theory Finder and the Seven Breeding Theories

Breeding theories are attempts to describe what a successful pedigree looks like structurally. Not which ancestors appear, but how the duplication within a pedigree is arranged.

The Breeding Theory Finder tests any pedigree against seven named theories and reports which are present. It appears in Pedigree Preview and in the Broodmare and Pedigree X-Ray reports, and each theory returns one of three states.

Why seven rather than one

Every breeding theory is a claim that one particular structure matters. Each has supporters, each has examples in its favour, and none of them explains a pedigree on its own.

Testing seven at once changes the question from "does this pedigree satisfy my preferred theory" to "how many independent structural patterns hold, and do they agree with each other". A pedigree satisfying several theories that point the same way is a stronger proposition than one satisfying a single theory in isolation, and one where the theories conflict is telling you something useful too.

Balance and Symmetry

Whether key pedigree influence is spread evenly across the sire and dam lines. Balanced pedigrees tend to produce more consistent outcomes than pedigrees where the significant material is loaded onto one side.

Parental Balance

A closer measure of the same idea, looking specifically at how evenly the duplicated ancestors are distributed between the sire and dam sides. See Ancestral Duplication, where this is also reported as a figure.

Male Transmission Bias

Whether repeated influence runs mainly through male-line pathways. Strong male dominance reinforces sireline traits, and can reduce overall balance if it is the only route the reinforcement takes.

Female Transmission Bias

The counterpart, asking whether repeated influence runs mainly through female-line pathways. Female-line reinforcement strengthens maternal traits and family consistency.

Influence Cluster Theory

Whether repeated influence is clustered within a narrow section of the pedigree rather than distributed across it. Clustering can strengthen specific traits sharply. It also concentrates risk, because everything is resting on one part of the pedigree.

Linebreeding, or Duplication Density

How concentrated the duplicated ancestors are overall. Dense linebreeding can reinforce elite traits, and carries more genetic risk as it intensifies. This is a measure of degree rather than a pass or fail, and neither extreme is inherently correct.

Sex Balance Theory

Whether an influential ancestor is duplicated close up through both a son and a daughter. Where that duplication alternates symmetrically across the sire and dam sides, the pattern is described as a Perfect Mirror, which is the strongest form the theory recognises.

How to use the results

Read them together, not individually. A single theory returning positive is weak evidence. Several agreeing is worth attention.

Presence is not quality. Most theories test structure, not the merit of the ancestors involved. A pedigree can satisfy a theory perfectly while duplicating a thoroughly ordinary horse. The structure only matters if what is being reinforced is worth reinforcing.

Structure is not the whole pedigree. These theories say nothing about whether the crosses in a pedigree have actually produced stakes winners. That is what the Impact Profile assesses, and the two should be read side by side.

Absence is not failure. Plenty of outstanding horses satisfy few or none of these patterns. A theory returning negative means that particular structure is not present, not that the pedigree is weak.

Testing before you commit

The Finder runs on hypothetical matings as readily as on named horses, so the structural profile of a proposed cross can be examined before a nomination is booked. If a theory you rate is not being satisfied, changing the stallion and re-running takes moments, and is considerably cheaper than discovering the problem three years later.
