Inbreeding, Linebreeding and Outcrossing in Thoroughbreds
Almost every conversation about thoroughbred breeding comes back to one question: should the same ancestor appear more than once in a pedigree, and if so, how close should the duplication be? Inbreeding, linebreeding and outcrossing are the three answers, and they sit on a single spectrum rather than in separate boxes.
Reading the notation first
Duplications are written as two numbers separated by a multiplication sign. A horse inbred 3x4 to a given ancestor carries that ancestor in the third generation on the sire side and the fourth generation on the dam side.
Generations are counted from the horse outwards. The sire and dam are the first generation, the four grandparents are the second, the eight great-grandparents the third, and so on. So a 3x4 duplication means the ancestor sits among the horse's eight great-grandparents on top and among the sixteen great-great-grandparents underneath.
The lower the numbers, the closer and more concentrated the duplication. A 2x3 is very close. A 5x5 is distant. Where three or more appearances occur you will see notation such as 4x5x5.
Inbreeding
Inbreeding is the appearance of the same ancestor on both the sire and dam sides of a pedigree, close enough to meaningfully concentrate that ancestor's genetic contribution.
The purpose is reinforcement. A breeder inbreeding to an outstanding ancestor is attempting to increase the probability that the traits which made that ancestor exceptional are passed forward, rather than diluted across generations. It is a deliberate act, not an accident, and some of the most influential horses in the breed are closely inbred.
The trade-off is that concentration is indiscriminate. Duplication reinforces whatever the ancestor carried, and no horse carries only desirable traits. Closer duplication raises the odds of expressing the strengths and the weaknesses together, which is why very close inbreeding is used sparingly and by breeders with a specific reason for it.
Linebreeding
Linebreeding is duplication at greater distance. The same principle applies, reinforcing a chosen influence, but the concentration is lighter and the risk lower.
There is no universally agreed boundary between inbreeding and linebreeding, and the terms are used loosely in conversation. As a working guide, duplications within the first three generations are usually described as inbreeding, and duplications from the fourth generation outwards as linebreeding. What matters more than the label is the density: how many duplications a pedigree carries, and how close they sit.
Linebreeding is the most common approach in commercial breeding, because it reinforces desirable influences while retaining enough genetic variety to avoid concentrating faults.
Outcrossing
An outcross is a mating with no duplicated ancestors within the first several generations. It is the opposite pole from inbreeding.
The purpose is variety. Outcrossing introduces fresh genetic material, which can restore vigour to a line that has been heavily concentrated, and can produce a horse that is physically sounder or more robust than its inbred contemporaries.
The trade-off runs the other way. Without duplication there is less predictability. An outcross pedigree gives a breeder fewer levers to pull in terms of reinforcing a specific known influence, and outcomes can be more variable.
The spectrum, not the boxes
Set out in order:
- Close inbreeding such as 2x3, maximum concentration, maximum risk
- Inbreeding such as 3x4 or 4x3, strong reinforcement
- Linebreeding such as 4x5 or 5x5x4, moderate reinforcement
- Outcross, no duplication within the generations examined, maximum variety
No position on this spectrum is correct in the abstract. The right answer depends on the mare, the traits being sought or avoided, and what the duplicated ancestor actually transmits.
Duplication is only half the question
Naming a duplication tells you very little on its own. Two pedigrees can both be inbred 4x4 to the same horse and behave completely differently, because what matters is the structure around the duplication.
Several questions sit underneath:
- Is the influence balanced? Duplications spread evenly between the sire and dam sides tend to produce more consistent outcomes than duplications loaded onto one side.
- Which pathways carry it? Duplication running mainly through male-line pathways reinforces sireline traits. Duplication running through female-line pathways strengthens maternal traits and family consistency. The two behave differently.
- Is it clustered or spread? Repeated influence concentrated in one narrow section of the pedigree strengthens a specific trait but concentrates risk.
- Through which offspring? Duplication of an ancestor through a son on one side and a daughter on the other is a distinct pattern with its own literature, and it is the basis of both Sex Balance Theory and the Rasmussen Theory.
