Introducing Our Magic Millions Yearling: A Filly with Star Potential

The Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale is one of the most anticipated events in Australian racing, where some of the finest young thoroughbreds in the country go under the hammer. We are thrilled to share the news of our latest acquisition; a stunning yearling filly purchased as Lot 320 on Day 2 of the sale for AU$250,000. Offered by the renowned Daandine Stud in Goomburra, Queensland, this filly represents a promising pedigree and a connection to proven success.

The Stud

Daandine Stud has built a stellar reputation for producing elite racehorses. Among their graduates are Isotope, who sold at the 2019 Magic Millions Yearling Sale for AU$ 170,000 and has gone on to earn an impressive AU$ 1.2 million in prizemoney; Capitalist, who was purchased at the 2015 Magic Millions Yearling Sale for AU$ 165,000, and earned a staggering AU$ 3.5 million; and our very own Southport Tycoon, a standout performer purchased at the 2022 Magic Millions Yearling Sale for AU$ 300,000, with prizemoney now totalling AU$2.4 million and set for an exciting stud career at Widden Stud. With this rich history of stakes winners, it was no surprise that this particular yearling caught our attention.

The Sire

Her sire, the illustrious Zoustar, continues to shine as one of Australia’s top stallions. Standing at Widden Stud for AU$275,000, Zoustar has sired 60 stakes winners from 976 runners, achieving an above-average stakes-winning strike rate of 6.15%. Renowned for producing elite fillies such as Zougotcha, Sunlight, and Joliestar, his progeny typically excel over distances of 1200 to 1600 metres, with their peak performances often coming as three-year-olds. Zoustar’s pedigree, being by Northern Meteor and out of the Australian broodmare Zouzou, further enhances his appeal as a sire capable of producing champions.

The Dam

The filly’s dam, Diddles, brings her value to this pedigree on paper and through her track record in the sales ring. A daughter of the champion sire Snitzel, Diddles was a standout, selling for AU$ 400,000 as a yearling. Later, at the 2021 National Broodmare Sale, Newgate sold her for an incredible AU$ 1,000,000, underscoring her value as a high-quality broodmare. While Snitzel alone currently produces stakes winners at a rate of 3.8%, his combination with Zoustar has been transformative, raising this figure to 25%. Of 16 runners bred on this cross, four have become stakes winners—a remarkable achievement that reinforces the potential of this pairing.

The Analysis

What makes this filly even more exciting is her 20/20 Match pedigree rating. This means she has a 15% higher likelihood of becoming a stakes winner than a standard mating. The cross is also enriched by the presence of Danehill and Snippets in the dam line, a proven formula for success that boasts 8% Group 1 Winners to Runners and 20% Stakes Winners to Runners. This same cross has produced notable performers such as Zougotcha, Joliestar, and The Astrologist, and most intriguingly, four of these five stakes winners are fillies.

Further analysis using G1 Goldmine’s TIGHT Impact Profile reveals that 50% of her analysed pedigree crosses across four generations are outperforming expectations. This indicates that her pedigree combines proven and emerging potential, giving her every chance to excel.

The Power of Redoute’s Choice

The inbreeding to Redoute’s Choice in this filly’s pedigree, positioned in the Q2 and Q3 sections, is an exciting feature with proven success. This pattern has already produced 10 stakes winners from 116 runners, delivering an impressive 8.62% Stakes Winners to Runners strike rate. Notably, it includes emerging prospects like Schwarz and Growing Empire, with the latter carrying the same Zoustar x Snitzel nick as our filly.

The Bloodstock Agent

In addition to her pedigree credentials, this filly impressed Mitchell Bloodstock with her physical attributes. She was noted for her lovely scope and quality, balanced movement, and kind, intelligent eye. While not as forward as some yearlings, she displays all the hallmarks of a horse that will mature into a high-class performer with time.
